Ballroom Dance History

Ballroom dances first appeared in Renaissance Italy as a court dance for the privileged. It quickly spread throughout Europe and the Americas in 20th century and danced by common people.

Today, ballroom dancing applies to numerous dances in which a “leader” and a “follower” dance together. There’s physical contact through their upper or lower bodies, or simply their arms in different dances.

This graceful and slow two person dance was first introduced in Vienna. It follows a slower tempo and uses “the box step,” a series of movements that form the shape of a box. Today the waltz is the most famous dance of the ballrooms around the world.

Cha Cha Cha

This rhythmic dance created in Latin America managed to meld together both the slow and very energetic movements. It focuses on footwork while keeping your hips moving and your arms loose.

Salsa

You usually dance with a partner, but there is also a solo form known as “suelta.” The male leads the female by footwork and turns and uses very sensual and energetic body movements.

Swing

Swing is very lively and the style is similar to jazz, but you dance as part of a couple. If there are other couples, you can change partners throughout the performance. You swing, spin and jump together to fast-paced music.
