About Modern Dance

Similar to jazz, modern dance mixes elements of performance art and technique. It has acrobatic and aerial movements in groups and with partners. You focus on self-expression, originality, and improvisation. It is a more relaxed, free style of dance. You use moods and emotions to design the dance. Your performances usually changes and develop over time. The performance can be based interpretations of stories, religion, ancient myths, and current events. It is open to all interpretations.

New technology driven music is also giving way to new styles of modern dance.

Modern Dance Styles

House Dance

After the years of popularity of Disco, House music came from New York and Chicago clubs. The music uses subtler rhythms, jazz, Latin, soul, funk, R&B. The style is popular in clubs all over the world.

Punk Dance

Inspired by 1960’s garage rock, punk rock managed to attract fans with more energy. This dance style has strong and full body contact of live band audience, with frequent bumping and jostling both alone and in groups. Slam-dancing, moshing, and headbanging are all part of punk.

Rave Dance

Rave music has pulsating beats, loud volume and psychedelic effects. Dancers are free to create their freestyle of movements, with no rules about dance moves, usually in dark and crowded venues of dance clubs, nightclubs, and festivals. Dancers are encouraged to find inspiration in music, other people, and their mood.

Disco Dance

The popular disco music of the 1970’s because it was catchy and easy to dance to. Fans of this music often wore extravagant and sexy clothing while dancing. The style is free form, such as Bump, Hustle, Robot, Boogaloo, and Watergate.

Modern Dance Audtions

Competitions

You can audition for all the talent competitions on TV like “America’s Got Talent” or “So You Think You Can Dance.” Practice your dance piece until it is perfect. You only get one chance in front of the judges at the audition. If they think you are talented enough to compete, they will want you on their show.

Other dance competitions are found in the US and internationally including the Macedonia Open, The USA “Turn it Up” dance competition and annual Korean International Modern Dance competition.
